AudioEbooks

September 9th, 2007 by · No Comments · Electronic Resources

Just a reminder that we do now have access to three audio eBooks from Netlibrary – unabridged and users can save onto computer and then onto MP3 player etc. Files last for 2 weeks and then becomes unusable – need to resave if not finished. The books we have are:

Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk

The way of all flesh by Samuel Butler

Allan Quatermain by H. Rider Haggard.

Update on Ebrary

September 9th, 2007 by · No Comments · New Book Deals

I have been uploading the Marc records into the catalogue. I have done 23000 and will do the remaining 8,000 this week. There is one change to our ebooks which has been agreed by the Access to the Resources Group. Where possible we will now have one bib record for print and online – might even be two urls in the record if we have access via Netlibrary and Ebrary. This is following the pattern we have used for ejournals. This means the module code (if on reading list) will only need to be on one record – should make it easier for the students. On the downloads the system was set to match on ISBNs and an exact match at that ie the word ebook added to an ISBN in the Marc record will have meant it did not find a match and created a new record. Therefore when doing your reading list or order checking can you let me know if you find two bib records for same book? I will merge for now but will discuss with Ruth H on her return how to deal with in a more systematic fashion

2. Roles and ownership

June 17th, 2007 by · 6 Comments · AMR

Please comment on what the task is, how often it needs doing (if you know) and if it currently has an owner or needs one.

For example, upgrading Millennium, needs doing every 6 months, done by myself and Maureen.

Ebooks Update

May 12th, 2007 by · No Comments · New Deals

We have got trial access to a huge collection of ebooks from Ebrary – over 33,000 in all disciplines. As you know we have only dealt with Netlibary in the past but things are changing. We have also taken out a subscription to 180 titles from Taylor and Francis. The good news is that I have finally received the Marc records for most of them and uploaded into the catalogue. The bad news is that is if we had a print copy already in stock it has added the url to that bib record instead of creating a new record. Is that a bad thing? Historically we have always had one bib reord for a journal which could include print and online but two records for ebooks. I think it should be discussed at the next Access to Resources meeting. Either way I think it needs a bit more work by me and maybe by Innovative.

Remote searching for bib records

March 30th, 2007 by · 1 Comment · General Information Resources

We are currently trialling a new supplier for bib records called BDZ.

You may of noticed on the remote search screen (when ordering) that a couple of new entries have appeared.

BDZ moving med is for DVD records (which is the reason we are trailing them), BDZ10 monographs is for 10 digit ISBN’s and BDZ13 monographs is for 13 digit ISBN’s.

Maureen and I have also got the library of congress monographs working, so you have even more choice!

When searching for bib records to order against, you can select BNB, library of congress monographs, University of Liverpool, BDZ10, and BDZ13. Then you can search by either the 10 or 13 digit ISBN and fairly certain to get a hit.

Please use 13 digit ISBN’s out of preference. Feel free to use any of the records you pull through, but only use University of Liverpool records if you don’t get any others (as their records are not as detailed as the others).

If you have any questions please give me a ring on ext. 4550
